Electro-optic device with electric birefringence comprising a polarized polymer
Abstract
Abstract 1. An electrically controlled electro-optical device for modifying by electrical double refraction the polarisation properties of an incident optical radiation, said device comprising a body (6) effecting the transmission of said radiation, and control electrodes (13, 14) adapted to create within said body an electrical field (E) the intensity of which varies with the applied control voltage, characterized in that said body exhibits macroscopically the electro-optical properties related to a non-centrosymmetrical crystallographic class, and is constituted by a polymer or a copolymer, that zone of said body through which passes said radiation having acquired said properties due to a dipole moment previously induced by an electric polarization field.
