Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim
176 words
Apparatus for distention of a vein segment under controlled pressure, said apparatus comprising a syringe for containing an irrigation fluid, a cannula for introducing said fluid from said syringe into said vein segment and a resilient, expandable reservoir having an inlet connected to the syringe and an outlet connected to the cannula and providing a fluid path therebetween, said resilient, expandable reservoir limiting the hydrostatic pressure in the vein to a predetermined maximum as said fluid is introduced into said vein and said maximum pressure being determined substantially solely by the physical characteristics of the resilient, expandable reservoir and independent of either the pressure applied to the syringe or the rate of flow of said fluid into the cannula, characterised in that it further comprises valving means between the outlet nozzle of the syringe and the inlet portion of the resilient, expandable reservoir for selectively blocking fluid flow between said syringe and said reservoir, so that said fluid may be delivered to the cannula at said predetermined pressure without the application of pressure to said syringe.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
29 words
The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said valving means comprises a manually actuable stop-cock operable to generate transient pressures in said vein segment in excess of said predetermined maximum.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
75 words
The apparatus of claim 2, wherein said stop-cock is connected to, and in fluid communication with, said syringe, reservoir and vein segment, the arrangement being such that when said stop-cock is open, said reservoir is filled with fluid from said syringe and when said stop-cock is then closed, said reservoir delivers said fluid to said vein segment automatically at a substantially constant controlled pressure, and the manual squeezing of said reservoir produces said transient pressures.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
31 words
The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said cannula is detachably connected to said reservoir, and has a bevelled, tapered tip adapted for insertion into said vein segment without significant trauma thereto.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
28 words
The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said cannula includes means forming a site for substantially atraumatically tying said vein to said cannula to provide a fluid-tight seal therewith.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
24 words
The apparatus of claim 5, wherein said site-forming means comprises a gently sloped shoulder on said cannula proximate to the tip of said cannula.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
159 words
The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said cannula comprises: a conduit for communicating fluid to said vein; and a flat, elongate tip on the distal end of said conduit comprising: a distal bevelled portion having generally rounded edges, a non-tapered section on the side of said tip opposite said bevelled portion, said bevelled portion and said non-tapered section providing means for forming a generally arcuate leading edge on said tip for facilitating insertion of said tip into said vein and preventing damage to vein tissue; a tapered portion having a taper of about 7 to 15 degrees located proximally with respect to said bevelled portion, said tapered portion forming a ridge to provide means for retaining said cannula within said vein; and a shoulder having a taper of about 20 to 30 degrees located proximally with respect to and tapered in an opposite direction as said tapered portion to provide means for facilitating a sealing ligature around said vein.
