The invention relates to a gel-forming composition based on a) water, b) a water-soluble mixed cellulose ether with at least one nonionic substituent from the group of hydroxyalkyl and alkyl and at least one anionic phosphorus-containing substituent and c) a salt having an at least divalent cation; the phosphorus-containing substituent is a phosphonoalkyl or a P-alkyl-phosphinoalkyl group. Außerdem umfaßt die Erfindung ein Verfahren zur Herstellung eines Gels aus dieser Zusammensetzung durch Vermischen der festen Komponenten in trockener Form und anschließendes Lösen in Wasser oder durch Vermischen der Komponenten im wäßrigen System und durch Einstellung oder Vorgabe des zur Gelbildung erforderlichen pH-Werts. Das so hergestellte Gel kann aber auch durch Zugabe eines das Kation komplexierenden Mittels reversibel wieder aufgehoben werden, insbesondere bei seinem Gehalt an Al 3+ -Fe 3+ -, Zr 4+ - oder ZrO 2+ -lonen mit einer zu diesen Ionen mehr als stöchiometrischen Menge an Fluoridionen. Diese gelbildende Zusammensetzung wird insbesondere in der Erdölfördertechnik bei der Sekundärförderung von Erdöl eingesetzt.
