Abstract

Abstract A device for detecting concentrations of oxygen in gases by using an oxygen sensor element (10) having a substrate (12) provided with a heater (14; R H ) and a concentration cell part in the form of a laminate including a solid electrolyte layer (20; R s ) supported on the substrate. The device has a power supply circuit (50, R,-R,) to apply a controlled voltage (V H ) to the heater (14) to keep it at a constant temperature by controlling its resistance (R H ) to a constant value, and a current supply circuit (56,R 4 -R 7 ) which forces a controlled DC current (I c ) to flow through the solid electrolyte layer (R s ) in the sensor element (10) to thereby maintain a reference oxygen partial pressure in the sensor element. The current supply circuit (56,R 4 -R 7 ) is electrically associated with the power supply circuit (50,R,-R,) so as to vary the intensity of the current (I c ) in inverse proportion to the voltage (V H ) applied to the heater (R H ) for the purpose of maintaining the reference oxygen partial pressure constant even when the temperature of the concentration cell part of the sensor element (10) varies depending on the temperature of the gas subject to measurement.
