Process for the preparation of pyridines
Abstract
Abstract Pyridine is prepared by ammoxidation (= reaction with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas and ammonia, optionally in the presence of water vapour) of cyclopentadiene in the presence of a (precipitating) silica gel as a catalyst, which in particular has a lower Al2O3 and/or TiO2 content in regions close to the surface and a solid acid strength corresponding to a pKa of < +4.0. The silica gel catalyst should additionally have a surface area between about 200 and 800 m<2>/g and a pore volume between about 0.2 and 2.0 cm<3>/g; the reaction temperature is between about 200 and 400 DEG C. The process without exception gives pyridine selectivities between about 40 and 60 % and no pyridine homologues which are difficult to separate from the pyridine.
