Claim 1
Independent Claim
228 words
A method for exhaust emission control for a diesel engine, characterized by the following steps: catching carbon particles in a path of exhaust gas by a trap having no directional effect with respect to air permeability; introducing air and directing it against said trap in a direction substantially perpendicular to thedirection in which the exhaust gas flows from the engine to the trap; subjecting said trap to oxidation treatment so as to oxidize particulates of carbon caught by the trap to achieve regeneration of the trap by controlled supply of fuel to a fuel injection nozzle opening in a path of flow of the introduced air, controlling the conditions under which said trap is subjected to oxidation treatment so that an allowable exhaust pressure of the engine is determined with respect to a rotational speed of the engine and a load applied to the engine, and controlling combustion carried out by the oxidation of the carbon particulatesin such a manner that when an exhaust pressure of the engine that is sensed exceeds the afore-mentioned allowable exhaust pressure an amount of heat and a heating time necessary for performing the oxidation are determined based on an actual value of temperature of the trap that is measured and the amount of heat thus determined is supplied for the trap for a period of the heating time that has been determined.
