Abstract
Abstract An apparatus (A) and method for preserving living organs extracorporeally in vessel (V) having a hyperbaric chamber (C) therein. The organ (0) stored in chamber (C) is provided with perfusate (P) from a reservoir (R) which is open to the atmosphere and freely accessible for the user who may thereby change or add constituents to the perfusate (P) without depressurizing the apparatus (A).

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 18
Claim 1
Independent Claim
69 words
An apparatus for preserving living organs extra corporeally utilizing a perfusate, comprising: an organ preservation vessel formed having a hyperbaric chamber therein for storing organs in a hyperbaric atmosphere, said vessel having a sealable door to permit access to said hyperbaric chamber; a reservoir for containing a supply of the perfusate at ambient pressure; and, perfusate supply means for supplying the perfusate from said reservoir to said hyperbaric chamber.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
69 words
An apparatus for preserving living organs extra corporeally utilizing a perfusate, comprising: an organ preservation vessel formed having a hyperbaric chamber therein for storing organs in a hyperbaric atmosphere, said vessel having a sealable door to permit access to said hyperbaric chamber; a reservoir for containing a supply of the perfusate at ambient pressure; and, perfusate supply means for supplying the perfusate from said reservoir to said hyperbaric chamber.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
105 words
The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said perfusate supply means, includes: a conduit having a first end in fluid communication with said reservoir and a second end in fluid communication with said hyperbaric chamber; pump means communicating with said conduit for pumping the perfusate from said reservoir at said ambient pressure to said hyperbaric chamber at said hyperbaric atmosphere through said conduit; and, valve means interposed between said first end of said conduit and said second end of said conduit for maintaining the pressure differential between said reservoir- and said hyperbaric chamber yet permitting perfusate to flow from said reservoir to said hyperbaric chamber. ,
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
20 words
The apparatus of claim 2, further including: perfusate return means for returning perfusate from said hyperbaric chamber to said reservoir.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
88 words
The apparatus of claim 3, wherein said perfusate return means including: a return conduit, having a first end in fluid communication with said hyperbaric chamber and a second end in fluid communication with said reservoir; and valve means, interposed between said first end of said return conduit and said second end of said return . conduit, for maintaining the pressure differential between said hyperbaric chamber and said reservoir yet permitting perfusate to flow from said hyperbaric chamber to said reservoir through said return conduit at a controlled rate.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
23 words
The apparatus of claim 4, further including: filtration means, associated with said return conduit, for removing impurities and organ by-products from the perfusate.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
26 words
The apparatus of claim 1, further including: temperature control means for maintaining the temperature of the organ contained in said hyperbaric chamber within a prescribed range.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
69 words
The apparatus of claim 6, wherein said temperature control means including: temperature sensing means for sensing the temperature of the perfusate; thermostat means, associated with said temperature sensing means,. for generating a control signal when the temperature of the perfusate deviates from the prescribed range; and, heat transfer means in heat transfer relationship with the perfusate and responsive to said control signal for effecting the temperature of the perfusate.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
18 words
The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising: pump means for providing gas under pressure to said hyperbaric chamber.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
19 words
The apparatus of claim 8, further comprising: means for regulating the pressure of the gas in said hyperbaric chamber.
Claim 11
Independent Claim
52 words
A method for preserving living organs extracorporeally utilizing a perfusate, including the steps of: storing the organ in a chamber formed in a vessel having a hyperbaric atmosphere; maintaining a supply of the perfusate in a reservoir under ambient pressure; and, supplying the organ in the chamber with perfusate from the reservoir.
Claim 12
Independent Claim
