A laminated electrode (10), consisting essentially of: a cathode (14), consisting of film having upper and lower surfaces substantially parallel to each other, said upper surface having a metal layer of molecular thickness deposited thereon; an anode (12) consisting of film having upper and lower surfaces substantially parallel to each other, said upper surface of said anode (12) having a metal layer of molecular thickness deposited thereon; a layer of dielectric material (16) laminated to the lower surface of said cathode (14) and the upper surface of said anode (12); an interactive working area (20) consisting of aligned apertures (22, 24, 26) extending through said dielectric material (16) and said cathode (14) so as to provide access to the thus exposed portions of said anode (12) and cathode (14) and wherein said interactive working area (20) contains a glucose permeable, silicone water-based elastomer (30) bonded to said aligned apertures (22,24,26); and a layer of enzyme (28) bonded to the anode (12) beneath said glucose permeable, silicone water-based elastomer (30).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
20 words
The laminated electrode of Claim 1, in which the anode (12) comprises film with a layer of platinum vapor-deposited thereon.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
17 words
The laminated electrode of Claims 1, in which the cathode (14) comprises film with silver deposited thereon.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
21 words
The laminated electrode of Claim 1, containing glucose oxidase as the layer of enzyme (28) in said interactive working area (20).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
17 words
The laminated electrode of Claim 1, in which the glucose permeable, silicone water-based elastomer(30) comprises a polydiorganosiloxane.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
18 words
The laminated electrode of Claim 1, wherein the glucose permeable, silicone water-based elastomer (30) comprises an end-blocked polydiorganosiloxane.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
21 words
The laminated electrode of Claim 1, wherein the glucose permeable, silicone water-based elastomer (30) comprises a vinyl or hydroxyl end-blocked polydiorganosiloxane.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
17 words
The laminated electrode of Claim 1, in which the glucose permeable, silicone water-based elastomer(30) comprises a polydimethylsiloxane.
Claim 9
Independent Claim
165 words
A method of fabricating a disposable electrode (10) for an electrochemical sensor, comprising the steps of: laminating a first sheet including a layer of cathodic material (14), having upper and lower surfaces substantially parallel to each other, and a second sheet including a layer of anodic material (12), having upper and lower surfaces substantially parallel to each other, to a dielectric layer (16) such that the dielectric layer separates the first and second sheets; fabricating an interactive working area (20) consisting of aligned apertures (22, 24, 26) extending through said dielectric material (16) and said cathodic material (14) so as to provide access to exposed portions of said anodic material (12) and cathodic material (14); severing said first and second sheets to form individual electrodes; applying an enzyme layer (28) to the anodic material (12) in said interactive working area (20); applying a silicone water-based elastomer (30) in said interactive working area (20) over said enzyme layer (28), and curing said silicone water-based elastomer (30).
