Abstract

Abstract To deliver a controlled dosage of an insoluble material into a living body, the material is provided in measured amounts in vials (12), and a system is provided forflushing the entire content of insoluble materials from the vial into the body. Insoluble radioactive material, such as glass microspheres incorporating radioactive isotopes, are packaged in a plurality of vials, preferably with different amounts of material. An accurate dosage of radioactivity can be delivered by administering the entire contents of one or more vial(s) according to the sum of radioactivity in selected vials as determined by the initial measurement of radioactivity and by the natural half-life of the isotope.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 24 words
A system as claimed in claim 1 which further comprises means for venting air prior to pumping liquid with entrained particulates into the body.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 55 words
A system as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the interior of the vial or vials is substantially free of edges or corners whereat the insoluble particulates may reside and has a bottom surface which declines smoothly and continuously to a lowermost region, whereat particulates tend to accumulate under the force of gravity.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 39 words
A system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the ratio of the density of the particulates to the density of the liquid compatible with internal administation into the body is between 1.5 and 3.5.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 52 words
A system as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein in flushing particulates from each vial, a volume of liquid between 50 and 400 times the volume of particulates in the vial prior to the flushing removes at least 75 percent of the particulates from the vial into the body.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 32 words
A system as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the ratio of the volume of particulates in each vial to the volume of the vial is less than 0.2.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 107 words
A system as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein every vial is sealed with a self-sealing septum; wherein the inlet means and the outlet means of a vial during passage of liquid therethrough are hollow needles inserted through said septum of the vial; and wherein the pumping means comprises a syringe having a barrel and a piston slidable within said barrel and valving means for directing the flow of liquid from the source of liquid into said barrel when said piston is withdrawn within said barrel through the first conducting means to the vial or vials when said piston is plunged into said barrel.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 18 words
A system as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the number of vials is one.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 66 words
A system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 7 wherein the number of vials is z+1, where z is at least 1, preferably 3, and wherein, prior to flushing of particulates from any of the vials, at least one of the vials contains a first amount of particulates and all of the vials contain an integral multiple of said first amount of particulates.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 54 words
A system as claimed in claim 9 wherein, prior to flushing of particulates from any of the vials, each of the vials contains a different amount of particulates and contains an amount of particulates equal to 2 n times said first amount of particulates, where n is an integer between 0 and z, inclusive.
