Die Steuersysteme sind mit einer Selbstüber­wachungsfunktion und einem, einen definierten Speicherbereich für Fehlermeldungen aufweisenden, nichtflüchtigen Speicher aus­gestattet. Das Diagnosesystem umfaßt ein Anzeigesystem in einem Kombinationsinstrument des Kraftfahrzeugs und eine Testeinheit, mit der die Steuersysteme über ein serielles Bussystem mit einer Reizleitung (L) und einer Kommunikationsleitung (K) ver­bunden sind. Durch die Testeinheit können auf eine manuelle Eingabe hin Fehlermeldungen aus den definierten Speicherbe­reichen der Steuersysteme ausgelesen und auf dem Anzeigesystem dargestellt werden. Eine Diagnose wird hierbei durch Aufstecken eines Diagnosesteckers auf eine mit der Testeinheit verbundene Steckvorrichtung eingeleitet.
