Abstract

In the case of a device for the continuous transcutaneous monitoring of the glucose level in the blood of a patient, the earlobe is irradiated with light, the glucose-specific absorption being detected with the aid of a detector arrangement. The radiation source (1) used is a broadband lamp, the light of which is optically divided into three light channels, each with a chopper (2, 3, 4) with an individual frequency, a filter (8, 9, 10) and an optical waveguide (12, 13 , 14) is coupled into an ear clip (15). The output signal of the detector arrangement (16) is connected to an evaluation circuit (31) via lock-in amplifiers (18, 19, 20, 22) matched to the chopper frequencies. The transmission wavelength of the first filter (8) lies in a range which mainly responds to the number of red blood cells, that of the second filter (9) in a range where glucose is only weakly absorbed, and that of the third filter (10) in the range of an absorption band of glucose. In this way, fluctuations in the layer thickness of the earlobe and the brightness of the radiation source (1) can be detected and evaluation errors caused thereby can be avoided.
