Abstract

Abstract A wound dressing comprises an alginate layer fixed to a plastics backing layer, such as a polyurethane film. The backing layer extends beyond the edges of the alginate layer to provide a marginal portion which is coated with adhesive. Such a dressing may be formed by providing an adhesive-coated plastics film having a lamella releasably attached to its adhesive surface, cutting the lamella into an inner and an outer portion, such that the outer portion surrounds the inner portion, removing the inner portion to expose a region of the adhesive-coated plastics film, and attaching the alginate layer to the exposed region of film.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 47 words
I. A wound dressing comprising a wound-contacting layer fixed to a substantially liquid impermeable plastics backing layer, the wound-contacting layer being formed from an alginate, and the backing layer extending beyond the edges of the wound-contacting layer to provide a marginal portion which is coated with adhesive.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 26 words
A dressing according to claim I wherein the alginate is calcium alginate, silver alginate, zinc alginate, sodium alginate or a mixture of two or more thereof.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 12 words
A dressing according to claim 2 wherein the alginate is calcium alginate.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 16 words
A dressing according to any preceding claim wherein the alginate is in the form of fibres.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 20 words
A dressing according to any of claims I to 3 wherein the alginate is in the form of a powder.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 20 words
A dressing according to any of claims I to 3 wherein the alginate is in the form of a gel.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 20 words
A dressing according to any of claims I to 3 wherein the alginate is in the form of a film.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 29 words
A dressing according to any preceding claim wherein the plastics backing layer has a moisture vapour permeability in the range 1000 g/m 2 /24hr to 3000 g/m 2 /24hr.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 15 words
A dressing according to any preceding claim wherein the plastics film is a polyurethane film.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 13 words
A sterile dressing according to any preceding claim, contained within a bacteria-proof package.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 76 words
II. A method of forming a wound dressing comprising the steps of · i) providing an adhesive-coated plastics film having a lamella releasably attached to its adhesive surface, ii) cutting the lamella into an inner and an outer portion, such that the outer portion surrounds the inner portion, iii) removing the inner portion to expose a region of the adhesive-coated plastics film, and iv) attaching a layer of absorbent material to said exposed region of film.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 54 words
12 A method according to claim ll wherein, after attachment of the absorbent layer, the outer portion of lamella is removed in whole or in part to expose a further region of adhesive-coated film, to which is then attached one or more protective films to prevent soiling of the absorbent layer prior to use.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 30 words
A method according to claim II or claim 12 wherein, prior to removal of the inner portion of the lamella, a handling tab is adhesively secured to said inner portion.
Claim 14
Independent Claim 17 words
A method according to any of claims ll to 12 wherein the absorbent material is an alginate.
