Abstract

Abstract A computer terminal device includes a flat screen display element (15) and a touch-sensitive element (16). Simulated keyboards can be displayed on the display element and, in response to the touching of the simulated keys, generate appropriate control signals. The same flat screen display can also be used to display computer output, either the result of calculations or the result of information retrieval requests. The slim silhouette of this terminal makes it ideal for hostile environments such as the factory floor or the hospital room.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 99 words
A computer terminal comprising a housing adapted to be alternatively held in the hand or placed on a work surface, CHARACTERIZED BY a flat display screen in said housing for displaying output data and for displaying a plurality of simulated keyboards, a touch-sensitive element substantially coextensive with said flat display screen and responsive to physical touches on said element to generate signals identifying the position of the point of said element which has been touched, and a transparent protective layer sealing said screen and said element within said housing to protect the contents of said housing from environmental conditions.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 99 words
A computer terminal comprising a housing adapted to be alternatively held in the hand or placed on a work surface, CHARACTERIZED BY a flat display screen in said housing for displaying output data and for displaying a plurality of simulated keyboards, a touch-sensitive element substantially coextensive with said flat display screen and responsive to physical touches on said element to generate signals identifying the position of the point of said element which has been touched, and a transparent protective layer sealing said screen and said element within said housing to protect the contents of said housing from environmental conditions.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 24 words
The computer terminal according to claim 1 further CHARACTERIZED BY a microcomputer responsive to said touch-sensitive element for controlling the display on said screen.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 33 words
The computer terminal according to claim 1 further CHARCTERIZED BY a retractile electrical cable for connecting said terminal to computer facilities responsive to said touch-sensitive element for controlling the display on said screen.
Claim 5

The computer terminal according to claim 1 further CHARACTERIZED BY wireless connection means connecting said terminal to computing facilities responsive to said touch-sensitive element for controlling the display on said screen.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 50 words
A compact input and output computer interface CHARACTERIZED BY a touch-sensitive element for detecting the coordinates at which said element is touched, a flat screen display co-extensive with said touch-sensitive element, and means selectively responsive to touches on said touch-sensitive element for controlling the display on said flat screen display.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 50 words
A compact input and output computer interface CHARACTERIZED BY a touch-sensitive element for detecting the coordinates at which said element is touched, a flat screen display co-extensive with said touch-sensitive element, and means selectively responsive to touches on said touch-sensitive element for controlling the display on said flat screen display.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 26 words
The computer interface according to claim 5 further CHARCTERIZED BY means for displaying simulations of a plurality of computer input device on said flat screen display.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 19 words
The computer interface according to claim 6 CHARACTERIZED IN THAT said simulated computer input device comprises a typewriter keyboard.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 20 words
The computer interface according to claim 6 CHARACTERIZED IN THAT said simulated computer input device comprises a telephone key pad.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 21 words
The computer interface according to claim 6 CHARACTERIZED IN THAT said simulated computer input device comprises an application-dependent menu item selector.
Claim 12
Independent Claim 78 words
The method of providing data to a computing facility CHARACTERIZED BY a) displaying a simulated keyboard on a flat display device, b) detecting the position of the point of touching said simulated keyboard using a touch-sensitive layer associated with said flat display device, c) translating said position of the point of touch into a signal associated with the key of said simulated keyboard corresponding to said point of touch, and d) transferring said signal to said computing facility.
Claim 13
