Abstract

The invention relates to highly water-absorbent polymers with a low content of oligomers extractable with water or physiological saline. They are obtained by using a crosslinked polymer containing carboxyl and / or carboxylate groups, e.g. Poly (meth) acrylic acid is first reacted with an unsaturated hydrophobic glycidyl compound, whereupon the reaction product is then polymerized. The polymerization is advantageously carried out in the presence of a multifunctional crosslinker. Polymers containing less than 10% by weight extractable oligomers can be obtained in this way. The invention further relates to the use of these polymers for the absorption of body fluids in the hygiene field.
