Abstract

Abstract An intelligent workstation in a network which automatically generates a data stream in which a calendar owner can request the status of a plurality of calendars maintained by an electronic calendaring system. A first data structure is generated by the system in response to the entry of calendar information by the calendar owner. The first data structure includes a plurality of predetermined fields for storing the calendar information. Each of the plurality of fields are compared to equivalent fields in identified ones of the plurality of calendars. A second data structure is then generated for each of the identified ones of the plurality of calendars which sets forth the status of calendaring an event thereon. The second data structure is transmitted to the calendar owner to state/confirm the status of each of the identified ones of the plurality of calendars. The users workstation compiles the received data structures and can either display the compound result so that, for example, the user can make a decision as to the time a meeting shall take place and, by a separate operation, enter the same into the various calendars or the workstation can determine, assuming the same to be possible, the time for the meeting itself and automatically generate and transmit what is in effect a second iteration of the operation to enter the selected meeting time into the various calendars, provoking confirmation.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 172 words
An intelligent workstation having a user interface, a facility for supporting calendar operations and a system interface by which it is or can be connected into a network of compatible workstations of similar capabilities, the calendar facility being arranged in response to either a request via the user interface or an internal process, to generate a data structure and transmit the same via the system interface to other connected workstation to interact with the calendar facilities thereof, such data structure including a plurality of predetermined fields for storing calendar information relating to the status of calendars identified in the structure; and in response to the receipt of such a data structure, to compare each of the fields with equivalent fields of its supported calendar, if it is identified, adjusting such fields as a function of the comparison if so required, and generating a response data structure setting forth the status of the supported identified calendar and transmitting it to the requesting workstation to confirm the current status of the supported identified calendar.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 172 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 20 words
A workstation as claim in claim 1, arranged to automatically invoke a calendar function in response to such status response.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 57 words
A workstation as claimed in claim 2 wherein the invoked calendar function is the scheduling of an event and the data stream is established by selecting a classification which is associated with such scheduled event; establishing a set of calendar parameters; selecting the calendar function to be performed; and selecting one of a plurality of status requests.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 54 words
A workstation as claimed in claim 3, wherein the parameters are generated by selecting an identification for the calendar event; specifying a list of names which are associated with a plurality of calendars being maintained on the system; setting a priority for the calendar event; and establishing a time span for the calendar event.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 91 words
A workstation as claimed in any preceding claim, arranged so that any of the following can be performed via the user interface the security level of an invoking calendar owner or other user can be entered; the status of an event to be scheduled can be entered; one of a plurality of triggers can be selected to be transmitted to identified calendars prior to the occurrence of an identified scheduled event; and a time can be designated at which the selected one of said plurality of triggers is to be transmitted.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 87 words
A workstation as claimed in claim 5, including an audio tone generator and being adapted to maintain a local names list of system calendars, to store triggers and to automatically invoke stored triggers at the designated times therefor in respect of the residents of the stored names list, thereby to cause any of the following to occur at the appropriate system workstations, if still connected, a message to be transmitted thereto for display; an audio tone the be generated thereat; and/or a process to be executed thereat.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 78 words
A workstation as claimed in claim 2 or any claim appendant thereto, wherein the invokable calendar functions include automatically requesting the status of a specified meeting at a specified time; identifying an attendee which is required to attend said specified meeting; requesting the status of attendees previously scheduled to attend a specified meeting; and cancelling an invoked calendar function at a specified time in response to a status of the specified attendee indicating non-attendance at a specified meeting.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 111 words
A workstation as claimed in any preceding claim, adapted to process received response data structures to display a composite result at the user interface or, in autoresponse mode, for which a time duration has been specified, to perform a second iteration to generate another data structure in response thereto and to transmit the same to the identified calendars to cause the entry of the first found permitted time found at which the parameters for that meeting are satisfied, including falling within the specified time duration, thus scheduling the entry in each calendar in that available common time slot that does not include an entry which is included in said search criteria.
