Abstract

Abstract A syringe which is suitable for discarding after a single use comprises a generally tubular syringe body (10) which has a double-ended hollow needle (12) extending generally axially through a first, closed end thereof and is open at its second end to permit insertion of a liquid container (16) such as an ampoule containing a liquid material to be injected. A removable plunger rod (19) is provided to enter such a container within the syringe body to inject liquid from it via the needle, and a resilient retaining means (15) extends generally radially inwardly from the open end of the syringe body, to allow insertion of a liquid container but prevent its subsequent withdrawal.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 132 words
A syringe suitable for discarding after a single use, characterised in that it comprises a generally tubular syringe body (10) which is closed at a first end thereof, a double-ended hollow needle (12) extending through said closed end generally axially with respect to the syringe body, the second end of said syringe body being generally open so as to permit the insertion of a liquid container (16) into said syringe body, a resilient retaining means (15) extending from said second end of said syringe body in a generally radially inward direction so as to allow the insertion of a said liquid container but to prevent its withdrawal by engaging the adjacent end of a said container, and a plunger rod (19) adapted to reversibly enter a said container within said syringe body.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 132 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 25 words
A syringe according to claim 1, characterised in that the plunger rod (19) is removably attachable to the adjacent end of the syringe body (10).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 21 words
A syringe according to claim 1 or 2, characterised in that the syringe body (10) is moulded around the needle (12).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 48 words
A syringe according to any of claims 1 to 3, characterised by a needle sheath (13) slidably mounted for movement between a first position (Fig. 1) in which the needle (12) is exposed for use and a second position (Fig. 2) in which the needle is enclosed therein.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 33 words
A syringe according to claim 4, characterised in that the needle sheath (13) is retained in said second position thereof in a manner (20) which renders subsequent re-exposure of the needle very difficult.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 41 words
A syringe according to claim 4 or 5, characterised in that the needle sheath (13) is slidably mounted upon an axial projection (11) extending from the closed end of the syringe body (10) and within which the needle (12) is disposed.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 27 words
A syringe according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that the resilient retaining means is in the form of one or more inwardly-projecting spigots (15).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 20 words
A syringe according to claim 7, characterised in that the spigot (15) is in the form of an annular web.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 44 words
A syringe according to claim 7 or 8, characterised in that the spigot(s) (15) is/are shaped to assist their deflection when a liquid container (16) is inserted in the syringe body(10) but to abut the adjacent end of said container within the syringe body.
