Abstract

Abstract A device for delivering fluids to a flow through diagnostic device at a controlled rate is shown. It has a well with an opening in its bottom and a flow controlling membrane covering the opening. The size of the opening and the mean pore size of the flow controlling membrane are selected to achieve a controlled flow rate. In use the delivery device is mated with a test surface of a flow through diagnostic device and a fluid sample is placed in the well. The fluid flows through the delivery device and contacts a test area of the diagnostic device at a controlled rate. Thereafter assay reagents may be added to the test area through the delivery device or the delivery device can be removed and discarded.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 72 words
A device for delivering a fluid sample to a diagnostic device at a controlled rate comprising: a well for receiving a fluid sample, the well having a bottom, an opening in the bottom of the well so that the fluid sample will flow out of the well, and a flow controlling membrane covering th opening to deliver the fluid sample to a top surface of a diagnostic device at a controlled rate.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 72 words
A device for delivering a fluid sample to a diagnostic device at a controlled rate comprising: a well for receiving a fluid sample, the well having a bottom, an opening in the bottom of the well so that the fluid sample will flow out of the well, and a flow controlling membrane covering th opening to deliver the fluid sample to a top surface of a diagnostic device at a controlled rate.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 28 words
The device of claim 1 further comprising means in the device to selectively remove interfering substances from a fluid sample without trapping an analyte in the fluid sample.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 22 words
The device of claim 2 wherein the means to selectively remove interfering substances is a specific binding species for the interfering substance.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 17 words
The device of claim 3 wherein the specific binding species is secured to the flow controlling membrane.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 17 words
The device of claim 1 wherein the flow controlling membrane has assay reagents releasably coated on it.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 30 words
The device of claim 1 wherein the bottom of the well has a lower surface sized and shaped to mate with an upper surface of a flow through diagnostic device.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 27 words
The device of claim 1 further comprising a handle secured to the well to facilitate handling of the device without touching a fluid sample in the well.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 16 words
A diagnostic kit comprised of the device of claim 1 and a flow though diagnostic device.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 75 words
An assay for an analyte in a fluid sample comprising: delivering a fluid sample to the device of claim 1 so that the fluid sample flows out of the opening at a controlled rate; causing the fluid flowing out of the opening to contact an upper surface of a flow through diagnostic device having a specific binding species for the analyte secured to a top surface; and detecting the presence of analyte using a tracer.
