Abstract

Abstract A sensor element (10) includes an analyte-permeable matrix (16) which supports and maintains a sensing solution containing an analyte-sensitive indicator substance in a plurality of tiny vesicles (18). The sensor element (10) is prepared by combining the sensing solution remains suspended in these dispersed vesicles (18) after the matrix solidifies. A sensor element (10) made in accordance with the present invention may be placed at the end of an optical fibr (14).

A sensor element comprising: a matrix made from a material that is permeable to at least one analyte; a first sensing solution with an indicator that is responsive to a particular analyte; and a second sensing solution with an indicator that is responsive to a second analyte, each of said sensing solutions being dispersed within a plurality of separate vesicles that are dispersed throughout said matrix, each indicator being exposable within said matrix to an external excitation and adapted to display an output when exposed to the excitation, each of said displays being related to the content of the analyte in the sample.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 60 words
A method for making a sensor element the steps of: combining a sensing solution including an indicator substance that is responsive to an analyte with an emulsifier solution; adding a liquified matrix that is permeable to at least one analyte with the emulsified solution; dispersing the emulsified solution throughout the liquified matrix material; and allowing the matrix material to solidify.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 60 words
A method for making a sensor element the steps of: combining a sensing solution including an indicator substance that is responsive to an analyte with an emulsifier solution; adding a liquified matrix that is permeable to at least one analyte with the emulsified solution; dispersing the emulsified solution throughout the liquified matrix material; and allowing the matrix material to solidify.
