Abstract

Abstract A food package (10) having opposed upper and lower rigid parts (11,12) which are hinged together to meet along adjacent reference planes. Each part has flanges (30a, 31a, 32a, 33a; 30b, 31b, 32b, 33b) located in its respective reference plane and at least one food receiving recessed compartment (11; 13, 14) extending away from its respective reference plane and away from the other part. A flexible film (40) located in each reference plane is attached to the flanges of that part, surrounding its respective recessed compartment(s), to airtightly seal the contents thereof.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 315 words
A food package (10) of a height greater than its width and less than its length comprising: rigid first (11) and second (12) parts of transparent material and of essentially the same height as each other, each part comprising flanges (30a, 31a, 32a, 33a; 30b, 31b, 32b, 33b) in respective reference planes from which their respective heights are measured perpendicularly and each having a recessed compartment (11; 13, 14) extending from its respective flange (30a, 31a, 32a, 33a or 30b, 31b, 32b, 33b) in its respective reference plane in a direction away therefrom, a hinge means (16; 150) joining a side flange (32a) on the first part (11) to a side flange (32b) on the second part (12) and permitting the two parts (11, 12) to fold about said hinge means (16, 150) to form a package (10) in which the rigid first upper part (11) overlies the rigid second lower part (12) so that the respective reference planes are generally adjacent and parallel to each other and the flange (30a, 31a, 32a, 33a) on the rigid first upper part (11) is brought together essentially to mate with the flange (30b, 31b, 32b, 33b) on the rigid second lower part (12), and a flexible film (40) covering the recessed compartments (11; 13, 14) and attached to the flanges (30a, 31a, 32a, 33a; 30b, 31b, 32b, 33b) surrounding such recessed compartments (11; 13, 14), essentially in its respective reference plane, airtightly sealing the contents within their respective compartments (11; 13, 14), the rigid first upper part (11) having a compartment (11) running essentially the full length and width of the package (10) and containing a first food product, for example, crackers, and the rigid second lower part (12) having at least two compartments (13, 14) each containing a second food product of higher density than said first food product, for example meat, poultry, fish or cheese.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 82 words
A package according to claim 1, wherein the rigid first upper part (11) has a single large recessed compartment (11) surrounded by a continuous peripheral flange (30a, 31a, 32a, 33a) and wherein the two recessed compartments (13, 14) of the rigid lower second part (12) are separated by a divider flange or flanges (34) which are collectively encircled by a peripheral flange (30b, 31b, 32b, 33b) which opposes the peripheral flange (30a, 31a, 32a, 33a) of the rigid first upper part (11).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 22 words
A package according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein both parts have a height of approximately 1 1/2 inches (38.1 mm).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 34 words
A package according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein both parts are approximately 4 inches (101.6 mm) long, 2 inches (50.8 mm) wide and 1 1/2 inches (38.1 mm) in height.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 35 words
A package according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the hinge means (16; 150) is formed by the two edges of said opposed side flanges (32a, 32b) being joined to each other.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 33 words
A package according to claim 5, wherein the opposed side flanges (32a, 32b) are integral with each other with a portion (50) of thinned material at the outer edge thereof where they join.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 27 words
A package according to claim 6, wherein the said outer edge is slit (15) completely through its thickness between a plurality of spaced apart thinned portions (50).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 52 words
A package according to claim 5, wherein an enlarged slot (151) is cut out of the outer edges of said opposed side flanges (32a, 32b), leaving flexible hinge portions (150) of said flanges (32a, 32b) integral with each other and of the same thickness as that of the opposed flanges (32a, 32b).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 18 words
A package according to any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein the flexible film (40) is transparent.
