Abstract

Abstract A PGA socket (40) and a tool (132) for opening and closing the socket (40) is disclosed. The socket (40) includes a base housing (42) having contact elements (46) disposed in cavities (48). The contact elements (46) include laterally extending cantilever beams (90) which are bent out of the plane of the contact elements (40) to provide a force-free insertion of the leads (120) on the PGA (122). The socket (40) further includes a cover (44) slidably mounted on the housing (42) which when moved, drives the leads (120) into electrical engagement with the cantilever beams (90). The tool (132) includes a pair of spaced-apart jaws (154,156) with one (152) being fixed and the other (156) moveable towards the dixed jaw (154). The tool (132) is placed over the socket (40) with the jaws (154,156) on respective sides of the cover (44) so that as the one jaw (156) moves toward the other (154), it (156) pushes the cover (44) which moves the leads (120) either into or out of electrical engagement with the cantilever beams (90).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 77 words
An electrical socket (40) having a base housing (42) with elongated cavities (48) therein, a cover (40) slidably mounted on the housing (42) and having openings (78) in registration with the cavities (48) and contact elements (46) in the cavities and having cantilever beams (90) extending parallel to the sliding motion of the cover (40), characterised in that the cantilever beam (90) and a sidewall (106) of the cavity (48) define a lead (120) receiving space therebetween.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 77 words
An electrical socket (40) having a base housing (42) with elongated cavities (48) therein, a cover (40) slidably mounted on the housing (42) and having openings (78) in registration with the cavities (48) and contact elements (46) in the cavities and having cantilever beams (90) extending parallel to the sliding motion of the cover (40), characterised in that the cantilever beam (90) and a sidewall (106) of the cavity (48) define a lead (120) receiving space therebetween.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 39 words
The electrical socket (40) of claim 1 further characterised in that the cantilever beam (90) includes a first portion (90a) and a free end portion (90b) and with both portions (90a,90b) being at an angle relative to each other.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 29 words
The electrical socket (40) of claim 1 or 2 further characterised in that a spring (64) biases the cover (40) towards one side (60b) of the base housing (42).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 74 words
A tool (132) for moving a cover (40) on an electrical socket (40) across a surface (50) of a housing (42) of the socket (40) and having a handle (134), actuator (136) and an operating heas (138) characterised in that the head (138) includes a fixed jaw (154) on one side (146) and a moving jaw (156) on another side (148) movable by the actuator (136) toward and away from the fixed jaw (154).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 74 words
A tool (132) for moving a cover (40) on an electrical socket (40) across a surface (50) of a housing (42) of the socket (40) and having a handle (134), actuator (136) and an operating heas (138) characterised in that the head (138) includes a fixed jaw (154) on one side (146) and a moving jaw (156) on another side (148) movable by the actuator (136) toward and away from the fixed jaw (154).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 29 words
The tool of claim 4 further characterised in that the moving jaw (156) is mounted in a plate (158) slidingly supported by opposing sidewalls (142,144) of the head (138).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 26 words
The tool of claim 5 further characterised in that the plate (158) is moved by a reciprocating wedge (180) positioned between a pair of rollers (162,172).
