Abstract

Abstract A model-based reasoning system for diagnosing faults in a computer network has an information base that stores information about the computer network. This information includes the topology of the network, a class hierarchy containing a component library and diagnostic expertise, and a diagnosis episode. A diagnosis engine receives a pointer to a situation. Each situation includes a focus role and a most general class for the focus role. Based upon this situation, the diagnosis engine creates a diagnosis episode, using the information stored in the information base.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 16
Claim 1
Independent Claim 86 words
A model-based reasoning system for diagnosing faults in a computer network, comprising: an information base that stores information about a network, said information including topology of the network, a class hierarchy containing a component library and diagnostic expertise, and a diagnosis episode; and a diagnosis engine coupled to the information base, said diagnosis engine receiving a pointer to a situation, each situation including a focus role and a most general class for the focus role, said diagnosis engine creating a diagnosis episode based upon this situation.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 22 words
The model-based reasoning system of claim 1, wherein the class hierarchy includes causal branches associated with some classes in the class hierarchy.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 16 words
The model-based reasoning system of claim 2, wherein the class hierarchy is a multiple-inheritance class hierarchy.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 31 words
The model-based reasoning system of claim 3, wherein at least one situation has an associated action that establishes the truth of that situation or identifies a role player in the situation.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 27 words
The model-based reasoning system of claim 4, wherein at least one causal branch links two situations, said causal branch representing one of a plurality of causal relationships.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 108 words
A method of diagnosing faults in a computer network, comprising the steps: storing in an information base information about a computer network, said information including topology of the network, a class hierarchy containing a component library and diagnostic expertise, and a diagnosis episode; reporting a situation to a diagnosis engine, each situation including a focus role and a most general class for the focus role; establishing a truth value of the situation; exploring sub-situations linked to the situation by causal branches when the establishment of the truth value of the situation does not identify a repair, said exploring of causal branches being completed when a repair is identified.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 40 words
The method of claim 6, wherein the steps of establishing a truth value of a situation includes performing an action associated with the situation, said action establishing the truth of the situation or identifying a role player in the situation.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 28 words
The method of claim 7, wherein the step of establishing a truth value of a situation further includes inferring the truth value from sub-situations linked to the situation.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 32 words
The method of claim 8, wherein the causal branches are stored within the class hierarchy, and the relevance of a causal branch to the topology is determined by the focus role player.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 21 words
The method of claim 9, further comprising the step of posting actions to an agenda when said actions have non-negligible cost.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 24 words
The method of claim 10, further comprising the step of performing the posted actions in order of increasing costs until a repair is identified.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 85 words
A computer program for diagnosing faults in a computer network, comprising: an information base that stores information about a network, said information including topology of the network, a class hierarchy containing a component library and diagnostic expertise, and a diagnosis episode; and a diagnosis engine coupled to the information base, said diagnosis engine receiving a pointer to a situation, each situation including a focus role and a most general class for the focus role, said diagnosis engine creating a diagnosis episode based upon this situation.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 21 words
The computer program of claim 12, wherein the class hierarchy includes causal branches associated with some classes in the class hierarchy.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 15 words
The computer program of claim 13, wherein the class hierarchy is a multiple-inheritance class hierarchy.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 30 words
The computer program of claim 14, wherein at least one situation has an associated action that establishes the truth of that situation or identifies a role player in the situation.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 26 words
The computer program of claim 4, wherein at least one causal branch links two situations, said causal branch representing one of a plurality of causal relationships.
