Abstract

Abstract A digital signal processor (32) having an associated memory (34) executes a program interpreter (40) which interprets program routines stored in a program storage area (42) of the memory (34). The program routines are portions of a larger application program. The program routines are downloaded via control of a CPU (20) which stores a library of program routines in its associated program memory (28). <IMAGE>

Claim 1
Independent Claim 91 words
A digital signal processing system comprising: a digital signal processor; a first memory associated with said digital signal processor for storing program code to be executed by the digital signal processor; a second memory for storing program routines; interface circuitry operable to allow transfer of program routines from said second memory to said first memory; and a processing unit for controlling the transfer of program routines from the second memory to the first memory, such that the transfer can be accomplished without placing the digital signal processor in an idle state.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 18 words
The digital signal processing system of Claim 1 wherein said program routines are stored in a pseudo-code format.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 25 words
The digital signal processing system of Claim 2 and further comprising an interpreter associated with said digital signal processor for interpreting said pseudo-coded program routines.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 19 words
The digital signal processing system of Claim 3 wherein said interpreter is a program stored in said first memory.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 23 words
The digital signal processing system of Claim 3 and further comprising control code associated with said digital signal monitor for executing predetermined functions.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 18 words
The digital signal processing system of Claim 5 wherein said control code is stored in said first memory.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 15 words
The digital signal processing system of Claim 1 wherein said processing unit comprises a microprocessor.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 15 words
The digital signal processing system of Claim 1 wherein said interface circuitry comprises a bus.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 71 words
A method of controlling a digital signal processor comprising the steps of: storing a plurality of program routines associated with a application program in a first memory; transferring program routines from said first memory to a second memory associated with the digital signal processor; and executing an interpreter program which interprets the program routine, such that the transfer of the program routine may be accomplished without idling the digital signal processor.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 21 words
The method of Claim 9 wherein said storing step comprises the step of storing the program routines in a pseudo-code format.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 29 words
The method of Claim 10 wherein said executing step comprises the step of executing control code stored in the second memory responsive to commands interpreted by the interpreter program.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 23 words
The method of Claim 9 further comprising the step of indicating when the digital signal processor has completed execution of the program routine.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 25 words
The method of Claim 12 and further comprising the step of transferring data from said first memory to said second memory responsive to said indication.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 35 words
The method of Claim 13 and further comprising the step of determining a next program routine to transfer form said second memory to said first memory responsive to said data transferred to said second memory.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 32 words
The method of Claim 14 and further comprising the step of predicting a program routine which is most likely to be transferred next prior to transferring said data to said second memory.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 95 words
A telecommunication system comprising: a database management system; service control circuitry coupled to the database management system operable to receive and transfer data to the database system; a first memory associated with the service control circuitry for storing program routines; a digital signal processor coupled to the service control circuitry; a second memory associated with said digital signal processor for storing program code to be executed by the digital signal processor responsive to the service control circuitry; and interface circuitry operable to allow transfer of program routines from said second memory to said first memory.
