Abstract

The apparatus and method for observing infrared emission from excited molecules found in samples of interest have been studied. Over the wavelength range between 1 and 5 mum, two strong emission bands were observed using a PbSe detector (429), when organic compounds were introduced into a flame hydrogen / air (421). The 4.3 mum band (2326cm-1) is due to the asymmetric stretch of carbon dioxide, while the 2.7 mum band is due to the emission of both water and carbon dioxide . It has been found that the emission of carbon dioxide at 4.3 mum reaches its highest intensity at the tip of the flame (421), and that it increases with the amount of organic compound introduced into the flame (421) . For a chromatographic application, an optical filter (428) was used to isolate the emission band of 4.3 mum. The infrared emission detection system finds application in determining the total amount of inorganic carbon, chloride and chlorine available in aqueous samples. The detector is optimized by the use of a double vessel system capable of subtracting the background, thus eliminating the background noise as well as its fluctuations.
