Abstract
Abstract A portable communications receiver (10) with virtual image display (12) including a semiconductor array (35) providing a real image and an optical system (28) mounted to receive the real image and produce a virtual image at a viewing aperture (22). Electronics (37) are associated with the array (35) to produce real images in accordance with messages received by the receiver (10). The display (12) is sufficiently small to mount in a hand held microphone (11) for viewing by the operator while using the microphone (11).

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim
89 words
A portable communications receiver having: a miniature virtual image display (12) electrically connected to the portable communications receiver (10) and having a viewing aperture (22), the display including: a) image generation apparatus (21) for providing a real image, and b) an optical system (20) mounted adjacent to the image generation apparatus (21) to receive the real image therefrom, magnify the image and produce a virtual image at the viewing aperture (22), the optical system (20) producing a magnification sufficient to perceive the virtual image through the viewing aperture (22).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
68 words
A portable communications receiver as claimed in claim 1, wherein the optical system comprises an optical waveguide (91, 72, 82), coupled to the image generation apparatus wherein: the real image is projected into the optical waveguide and is reflected from internal sides thereof; and a diffractive lens, (75-77, 87-89, 122-124), coupled to the waveguide, magnifies the real image at a point at which the real image is reflected.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
120 words
A portable communications receiver (10) as claimed in claim 1 or 2, further characterized in that the optical system (20) includes a coherent bundle of fibre optics (24) defining a first (25) and a second (26) surface and tapered to provide a predetermined amount of magnification from the first surface (25) to the second surface (26), the bundle of fibre optics (24) being mounted with the first surface (25) positioned in juxtaposition to the real image provided by the image generating apparatus (21), and a lens system (28) mounted adjacent the bundle of fibre optics (24) to receive an image from the second surface (26) thereof, further magnify the image and produce a virtual image at the viewing aperture (22)
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
33 words
A portable communications receiver (10) as claimed in claim 3, further characterized in that the bundle of fibre optics (24) is tapered sufficiently to provide magnification of at least a power of two.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
34 words
A portable communications receiver (10) as claimed in claim 3 or 4, further characterized in that the lens system (28) is constructed to further magnify the image by a power of at least ten.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
30 words
A portable communications receiver (10) as claimed in any preceding claim, further characterized in that the apparatus (21) providing the real image is formed in a single semiconductor chip (40).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
29 words
A portable communications receiver (10) as claimed in any preceding claim, further characterized in that the apparatus (21) providing the real image includes a light emitting diode array (35).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
53 words
A portable communications receiver (10) as claimed in any preceding claim, further comprising image forming electronics (37), connected to the portable communications receiver (10) and the image generating apparatus, for providing the real image wherein the apparatus (21) produces the real image in response to signals received from the portable communications receiver (10).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
31 words
A portable communications receiver (10) as claimed in any preceding claim further characterized in that the apparatus (21) providing the real image includes a liquid crystal display or a semiconductor laser.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
23 words
A portable communications receiver (10) as claimed in any preceding claim, further characterized in that the portable communications receiver is a pager (100).
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
25 words
A portable communications receiver (10) as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the miniature virtual image display (115) is removable from the portable communications device.
