Abstract

Abstract A rotary sand reclaiming drum (1) incorporates inner and outer cylinders (3, 5) having a helical vane (9) located intermediate thereof, the drum (1) containing an abrasive media (M) and being supported upon a base (11) and rotated by a drive motor (17). The drum (1) contains an entrance segment (21) and an exit segment (23), reclaiming media (M) and sand (S) passing into the space (10) between the inner and outer cylinders (3, 5) at the exit segment (23) and being carried to the entrance segment (21) by the helical vanes (9). At the entrance segment (21), the media (M) is picked up by a reclaimer which reintroduces the media (M) into the reclaimer to recycle the media (M).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 244 words
A rotary sand reclaiming drum (1) for separating surface sand (S) from castings 4(C), the drum (1) containing an abrasive media (M) and comprising inner and outer concentric cylinders (3, 5) defining an annular space (10) therebetween, one or more helical vanes (9) located within said annular space (10), an entrance segment (21) to the drum (1) in which surface sand (S) is removed from the castings (C) by tumbling of the castings (C), the inner cylinder (5) of the entrance segment (21) being provided with means (33) for moving the castings (C) longitudinally therealong and having openings (7) defined therein through which removed sand (S) can pass into the space (10) between the two cylinders (3, 5), and an exit segment (23) of the drum (1), the inner cylinder (5) of the exit segment (23) having openings (37) defined therein through which said abrasive media (M) and any residue loosened sand (S) from the castings (C) can pass into the space (10) between the two cylinders (3, 5), means (38) in the space (10) between the two cylinders (3, 5) in the exit segment (23) of the drum (1) for moving the separated sand (S) and abrasive media (M) towards the space (10) between the two cylinders (3, 5) in the entrance segment (21) of the drum (1), and, at or adjacent the entrance segment (21) of the drum (1), recirculating means (45) for recirculating the abrasive media (M) into the drum (1).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 60 words
A drum as claimed in Claim 1 in which the means in the exit segment (23) of the drum (1) for moving the separated sand (S) and abrasive media (M) comprise an inclined member (38) directed towards the space (10) between the two cylinders (3, 5) of the entrance segment (21) of the drum (1) containing the helical vanes (9).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 69 words
A drum as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 in which the recirculating means comprises an annular wheel at the entrance to the entrance segment (21) of the drum (1) and which rotates with said drum (1), said wheel having a plurality of circumferentially spaced paddles (45) which receive the abrasive media (M) therebetween and lift said media (M) upwardly to reintroduce the media into the drum (1).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 83 words
A drum as claimed in Claim 3 in which the wheel has an outer wall (47) which extends between a radially inner edge of the paddles (45) and the outer cylinder (3), and an inner wall (49) extending between said radially inner edge of the paddles (45) and the inner cylinder (5), the inner wall (49) defining an entrance to the wheel from the space (10) between the inner and outer cylinders (3, 5) of the entrance segment (21) of the drum (1).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 26 words
A drum as claimed in Claim 3 or Claim 4 and including means (39, 40) for separating the recirculated sand (S) from the abrasive media (M).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 28 words
A drum as claimed in Claim 5 in which the sand/media separating means includes a screen (40) formed in the outer cylinder (3) of the entrance segment (21).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 26 words
A drum as claimed in Claim 6 in which the screen (40) includes a plurality of perforations (39) sized to allow passage of only said sand.
