Abstract

Abstract The differential is provided with a system for continuously varying and controlling torque distribution between the wheels of the same axle. A shaft (3,203) transmits torque to the axle shafts (10,11,210,211) through a differential (7,207) provided with a crown gear (5,205) rotatably coupled to input shaft (3,203). In order to transmit part of the torque, between the crown gear (5,205) and the axle shaft (10,11,210,211) end portions external to the differential, there are interposed in series: a) gearing-up means (15,17,18,215,217,220) connected to the crown gear (5,205); b) clutches (24,25,224,225) for releasably coupling for rotation, normally open and adapted for transmitting torque; c) hydraulic rams (34,35,234,235) for varying the condition of the clutches, so as to continuously control torque distribution between the axle shafts.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 219 words
An automobile differential, particularly for four wheel drive vehicles, provided with a system for varying and controlling continuously torque distribution between the wheels of a same axle, of the type comprising a housing (2, 202) containing a pair of axle shafts (10, 11, 210, 211) having their outer end portions fitted with respective means (13, 213) for coupling to a driving wheel (13a, 13b) of an axle of the vehicle, an input shaft (3, 203) being adapted for transmitting torque (M) to said axle shafts (10, 11, 210, 211) through a differential (7, 207) provided with a crown gear (5, 205) rotatably coupled to said input shaft (3, 203), characterized in that, in order to transmit part of the torque (M), between the crown gear (5, 205) and the axle shaft (10, 11, 210, 211) end portions external to the differential, there are interposed in series: a) gearing-up means (15, 17, 18, 215, 217, 220) connected to the crown gear (5, 205); b) means (24, 25, 224, 225) for releasably coupling for rotation, normally open and adapted for transmitting torque; c) control means (34, 35, 234, 235) for varying the condition of said means (24, 25, 224, 225) for releasably coupling for rotation, so as to continuously control torque (M) distribution between the axle shafts (10, 11, 210, 211).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 106 words
A differential as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that said gearing-up means consist of at least a couple of rotatably engaging gears (15, 17, 18, 215, 217), the input of which engages the input crown gear (5, 205), the out put of which engages at least one auxiliary gear (20, 21, 220) arranged coaxial to said axle shafts (10, 11); the diameters of said couple of gears (15, 17, 18, 215, 217) being calculated so as to cause the auxiliary gear (20, 21, 220) always to rotate at a higher speed of the crown (5, 205) for any operation condition of the differential (7, 50).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 110 words
A differential as claimed in claims 1 and 2, characterized in that said torque transmission releasable means (24, 25, 224, 225) consist of a continuously controllable clutch for each axle shaft (10, 11, 210, 211), said clutch being composed of a hub (30, 31, 230, 231) coupled to the respective end portion (11a, 11b, 211a, 211b) of said axle shafts (10, 11, 210, 211), by means of driven discs (27, 227) coupled for rotation with said hub (30, 31, 230, 231) by driving discs (26, 226) coupled for rotation to at least one bell member (22, 23, 55) rotating integral with said at least one auxiliary gear (20, 21, 220).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 40 words
A differential as claimed in claims 1 and 2, characterized in that said means for controlling the clutches (24, 25) consist of hydraulic rams (34, 35), said rams being located within said at least one auxiliary gear (20, 21, 220).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 35 words
A differential as claimed in claim 2, characterized in that there are provided two auxiliary gears (20, 21) coaxial to said hinge axles (10, 11) and each fitted with a clutch bell member (22, 23).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 44 words
A differential as claimed in claims 1 and 3, characterized in that one of said hubs (230, 231) connects to the respective axle shaft through a hollow shaft (56) coaxial to the axle shaft and integral with the spider (57) of the differential (207).
