Computer system and computerimplemented process for applying database segment definitions to a database
Abstract
Abstract Database segment definitions are applied to entities in a database by issuing statements to the database, rather than extracting a flat file of data, in order to identify the segments in which an entity is classified. The resulting classification is stored in the database. A segment definition is applied in several steps. Intermediate results are stored in temporary structures in the database and use a temporary identification for each entity to handle the fact that intermediate results may place an entity in more than one segment. Intermediate results are combined together to obtain a final classification. For relational databases accessed using SQL, the temporary results are stored in intermediate tables and statements issued to the database are generated according to the segment definitions and the scheme for assigning temporary identifiers. One scheme for temporary identifiers reduces the number of segments in which an entity might be classified, whereas another scheme reduces the number of statements generated.
