Abstract

Abstract An electrical shielded data connector includes an inner terminal support housing (46) carrying a plurality of electrical terminals (30) and includes shield members (130) surrounding the terminal support housing (46). This shielded sub-assembly is fitted into an outer housing and a rear support plate and cable support member can be assembled around a cable after the connector has been attached to the cable. The cable support member can be positioned in one of two orientations to provide for either a straight through or an angled cable exit. A cross talk shield (200) is positioned in a stuffer cap and is situated between adjacent terminals (30) when in the final position. Another cross talk shield (220) is positioned in a slot intermediate the terminals (30) at the lower side thereof.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 94 words
A shielded electrical connector for data transmission, comprising an insulating housing (4,404,520) having at least two signal terminals (30,560), each of which includes a forward contact section (36,658) and a rear wire connecting section (34,565), a wire stuffer cap (180,522) for urging wires to be terminated into connection with the rear wire connecting sections, and outer shielding (130,160;330,360;460;516,518) at least partially surrounding the insulating housing, characterised in that the stuffer cap (180,522) includes an axially extending slot (194,622) and cross talk shielding (200,480,524) is disposed between the terminals and in the axially extending slot.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 34 words
The connector of claim 1, wherein the housing (4,404) includes a slot (50,450) between the forward contact sections (36) and a cross talk shield is disposed in the slot between the forward contact sections.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 29 words
The connector of claim 1, wherein the housing (520) includes a slot (650) between the forward contact sections (658) which slot serves to establish an air-gap between the contacts.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 32 words
The connector of claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the cross talk shield (480) located in the slot (194) of the stuffer cap (180) is integrally formed with the outer shielding (460).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 40 words
The connector of claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the cross talk shield (200,524) located in the slot (194,622) of the stuffer cap (180,522) is separate from the outer shielding and is engaged therewith by one or more tabs (212,636).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 35 words
The connector of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the cross talk shield (524) in the slot (622) of the stuffer cap includes a rearward extension (630) which extends rearwardly beyond the stuffer cap.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 51 words
The connector of claim 6, including at least two different apertures via which a cable (526) is connectable to the terminals (560) and wherein the rear extension (630) comprises a rear rudder portion (638) which is bendable to a desired orientation to accommodate connection of the cable via a selected aperture.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 57 words
The connector of claim 6 or 7 which is a four position connector having four terminals (560), wherein the cross talk shield (524) of the stuffer cap (522) separates the four terminals into two pairs for receiving two pairs of twisted cable (528,530), and the rearward extension (630) is disposable between the two pairs of twisted cable.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 14 words
The connector of any one of the preceding claims wherein the connector is hermaphroditic.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 28 words
The connector of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the rear wire connecting sections (34,565) of the terminals are insulation displacement contacts and, for example, are barrel-shaped.
