Abstract
Abstract 20,249. " Astra " Soc. de Constructions Aeronautiques Anciens Etablissements Surcouf. July 17, [Convention date]. Anchoring.-For mooring an air-ship, a system of straps is permanently secured to the top of the casing of the balloon and is connected, by operating- cords carried by the air-ship, to pegs in the ground. The straps b are arranged in " crow's feet manner, as shown in Fig. 4, the connexions being either pentagonal eyelets m, Fig. 5, with separate upper straps, or rectangular eyelets n, Fig. 7, with continuous upper straps passing over rollers n<1>.The straps b are secured at the top to a spine c of stronger material, which is sewn to the casing, the holes being masked by an internally glued band. At the sides, the straps b rest on, and are detachably fastened to, strips b<1> of fabric glued to the casing. Normally, lines d, passing through eyes d<1> on the ends of the straps b, are secured to the care. To moor the air-ship, the lines d are pulled outwards to detach the straps b from the strips b<1>, cords f carrying anchoring - pegs g are attached to the lines d and pulled through the eyes d<1>, and the pegs g are fixed in the ground. The air-ship may in addition be steadied by making the inner parts of the cords f tangential to the casing, or by using a bottom girth with cords k. In re-starting, cords l fastened to the eyes d<1> and passing through eyes on the leech-line h are pulled from the car e to bring the straps b against the strips b<1>. The cords f may be used to steady the air-ship when in flight.
