Corn popper
Abstract
Abstract 409,596. Roasting grain. STEWART, G. F., and KINGERY MANUFACTURING CO., 420, East Pearl Street, Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S.A. Oct. 28, 1933, No. 30016. [Class 58.] Corn is " popped " in a heated rotatable drum having a wirework periphery and containing a second drum with larger perforations within which is arranged a conical screen the wider end of which forms a discharge opening at the side of the drum. The drums are contained within a casing 9 which carries bearings for a shaft 13 that is driven by a reversible electric motor. A clutch member 16 pinned to the shaft is adapted to be engaged by a co-operating member 17 secured to a head 19 closing the rear of the main drum 18 which is slidable and rotatable on the shaft 13. The front head of the drum is comprised by a dished annular member 20 that carries a handle 26 and a latch member 29 by which the drum can be held with its clutch member locked in engagement with or free from the clutch member 16. The drum 18 has a fine wire screen 21 as periphery upon which the grains of corn are heated till popped, the heating being accomplished by a gas burner 42 provided with finger like downward extensions 43 between which fragments of burning husk may fall. A second screen 32 of larger mesh than the screen 21, arranged within the first drum, is provided with a gateway 33 that is situated in advance of a plate 34 extending to the screen 32 at one side of slotted opening 22 to the passage between the screens ; through this gateway access is obtained to the interior of the second drum. Another gateway 37 is provided in the periphery of the conical screen 36 which is formed of sheet metal having large openings therein which however are not large enough to permit the passage of popped grains. In use the drums are turned till the gateway 33 is at the bottom and a charge of grain introduced through the open side of the coned screen 36 this grain immediately falling through the gateway 37 on to the screen 32. The drum is then rotated in the direction indicated the unpopped grains falling on to the screen 21, while the popped grains collect on the screen 32 thence passing to the coned screen 36 and outwards through the side opening. To remove unpopped grains after a sufficient length of time for roasting has elapsed the drum is rotated in the reverse direction the grains thus being thrown out through the slot 22.
