Abstract

Abstract <PICT:0589054/III/1> In a process for the catalytic conversion of hydrocarbons of the kind in which the catalyst is maintained in the reaction chamber as a relatively dense fluidized bed, the catalyst is withdrawn from the reaction chamber through a restricted passageway preferably of annular form, where it is stripped by contact with gases, e.g., steam, hydrocarbon gases, and is then passed through an enlarged passageway where it is further stripped by contact with gases introduced at a plurality of points. As shown the reactor 10 is provided with a catalyst-hydrocarbon suspension delivery pipe 16 enlarged at its upper end 28 to form a grid distribution member 32 having a flange 52 forming with the inner wall of the reactor an annular passage 48 down which the fouled catalyst flows over baffles 56 whilst being stripped with gases admitted through pipes 62. The catalyst then passes to a further stripping zone 46 constituted by a conical false bottom 64 spaced from the conical bottom 66 of the reactor and further stripping gases are admitted through pipes 68 at a lower velocity than the gases admitted through pipes 62.
