Abstract

Abstract NEW MATERIAL:A 2(5H)-furanone derivative of formulaI{SR is organic thio group at the 3-, 4- or 5-position of the furanone nucleus; R is -(CH2)pArYn[Ar is benzene or naphthalene residue; Y is a 6-12C group of alkyl, alkoxyl, amino, nitro, cyano, acetyl or halogen; (n) is an integer 0-3; (p) is 0 or 1]; (R'm) are 1-6C alkyl at the 3-, 4- and/or 5-positions of the furanone nucleus; (m) is 0- 3}. EXAMPLE:3-(p-Chlorophenylthio)-2(5H)-furanone. USE:A plant growth retardant. PROCESS:A 3-organic sulfinyl (RSO-)-gamma-butyrolactone of formula II is reacted with an acid anhydride, e.g. acetic anhydride or trifuloroacetic anhydride, to give the aimed 3-organic thio(RS-)-2(5H)-furanone.
