Abstract

Abstract 1,169,792. Anodizing. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Jan.26, 1967 [Feb.9, 1966], No.3934/67. Heading C7B. A method of anodizing selected metallic areas on a substrate comprises maintaining each such area in alignment with an opening in a reservoir, allowing the liquid to flow by gravity into contact with each metallic area and applying a current through the liquid in each reservoir to anodize the respective metallic area. As shown substrate 12 has a thin film circuit thereon comprising resistors 13-19 of an anodizable metal such as tantalum, low-ohmic paths 21, 22 and contact areas 26- 36. The substrate is inverted over the surface of block 51 having reservoirs 63-69 corresponding to the resistors and the resistors and reservoirs are aligned by means of locator pins 70 and spring clips 71. Lid 73, when closed and held by spring retainer 78, presses the substrate into contact with the surface of the block by rubber pad 76. Inversion of the block about trunnions 46 allows liquid in the reservoirs to flow into contact with the selected areas on the substrate and in this position current passes between a cathode situated within each reservoir, through the solution and the selected areas, and anodes 101-111 mounted in bores in the block and spring-biased against the contact areas on the substrate. Anodes and cathodes are connected to an external current source and provision is made for monitoring the change in resistance of each selected area as anodizing proceeds.
