Abstract A SYSTEM FOR RETORTING OIL SHALES KNOWN AS RELATIVELY LEAN AND RELATIVELY RICH OIL SHALES IS DESCRIBED WHEREIN THE SHALES ARE MIXED TO PROVIDE AN OIL SHALE HAVING A GENERAL OR AVERAGE. FISCHER ASSAY OIL CONTENTS IN THE RANGE OF FROM ABOUT 15 TO ABOUT 36 GALLONS PER TON AND RETORTING THE MIXTURE THUS FORMED IN A GAS COMBUSTION RETORT UNDER CONDITIONS TO RECOVER HIGHER YIELDS OF OIL PRODUCTS THAN WOULD BE OBTAINED WHEN PROCESSING EACH OF THE DIFFERENT OIL SHALES SEPARATELY.
