Abstract

Abstract A strip end welding machine having a base on which is slideably mounted a horizontally reciprocating, annular frame. The strips whose ends are to be welded pass axially through the frame transversely of its direction of reciprocation. The frame carries a shear for trimming the ends of the strips to be welded and welding and planishing rolls energizable for joining the overlap strip ends. The machine includes base-mounted clamps on either side of the frame for gripping the strip ends to be joined. The clamps are spaced from the welding zone and include a clamp bed of magnetic material and a magnet disposed opposite the clamp bed to clamp a strip therebetween. Each of the clamp bed and magnet are provided with a nose made of nonmagnetic material, which noses project away therefrom towards the welding zone. Each of the noses has a guiding surface thereon, each of said guiding surfaces being offset back from the adjacent clamping surface of the clamp bed and magnet a distance such that the distance between said guiding surface is greater than the thickness of the strip but close enough to prevent a buckling of the portion of the strip extending from the clamp bed and magnet to the welding zone.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 165 words
In a clamp construction for clamping the end of a strip to be welded in a welding zone of a strip welding machine, the combination comprising: a clamp bed of magnetic material spaced from said welding zone and having a first clamping surface thereon; a magnet having a second clamping surface thereon disposed opposite said clamp bed, said clamp bed and said magnet being movable relative to each other for clamping said strip therebetween; a nose of nonmagnetic material fixed with respect to each of said clamp bed and magnet and projecting away therefrom toward said welding zone, said noses each having a guiding surface thereon which is offset back from the respective clamping surface, the spacing of said guiding surfaces when said strip is clamped between said magnet and said clamp bed being greater than the thickness of said strip but close enough to prevent a buckling of the portion of the strip extending between the clamp bed and magnet and the Welding zone.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 165 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 34 words
The clamp construction defined in claim 1, including a pair of pressure fluid cylinders disposed on opposite ends of said clamp and connected between said clamp bed and magnet actuable for raising said magnet.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 24 words
The clamp construction defined in claim 1, wherein said guiding surfaces on said noses are generally parallel to said first and second clamping surfaces.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 32 words
The clamp construction defined in claim 1, wherein said guiding surfaces on each of said noses includes replaceable liners, each of said replaceable liners being offset back from the respective clamping surface.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 44 words
The clamp construction defined in claim 1, wherein said noses are L-shaped with one leg thereof being secured to the respective one of said clamp bed and magnet and the other leg thereof extending outwardly away from said one leg toward said welding zone.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 89 words
The clamp construction defined in claim 1, wherein said noses are L-shaped with one leg thereof being secured to the respective one of said clamp bed and magnet and the other leg thereof extending outwardly away from said one leg toward said welding zone; and wherein said guiding surfaces on each of said noses includes replaceable liners, each of said replaceable liners being fixedly secured to said other leg of said L-shaped nose on the side thereof facing said strip and being offset back from the respective clamping surface.
