Abstract

Abstract A method and apparatus for excavating plants, especially shrubs and trees, in which a vertical digging cylinder, is provided, which is split longitudinally and is arranged to be opened and placed around a plant and then closed. The cylinder is then driven vertically into the ground. A cut is then made at the bottom of the cylinder to cut off the plug of ground taken by the cylinder and the plant and plug of ground can then be lifted and transplanted in a selected location. The cylinder has a sleeve of wrapping material, tar paper, for example, therein which contains the periphery of the plug while a bottom cap is placed on the sleeve after the plant and plug are lifted from the hole. The apparatus forms an attachment on the front end of a straddle-type vehicle so the apparatus can be moved about in a plant nursery or the like and an operator in an operator''s station on top of the vehicle can observe the apparatus and control the operation thereof.
