Abstract
Abstract A method of drying particulate material, particularly that which, like grain, has a critical degree of heat tolerance, while the material forms and moves through a bed of material, utilizing a heated dry gaseous medium and passing the same to and in direct contact with the bed-forming and traversing material.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
171 words
In a method of continuous drying particulate material through contact with a gaseous medium, the improvement comprising the steps of: gathering particles of a particulate material to be dried into a bed; releasing a gaseous medium in a confined space exterior to the bed and defined in part by a superficies area of the bed of particulate material; generating a gas pressure differential between the gas pressure within the confined spacE and the gas pressure within the bed of particulate material whereby the released gaseous medium flows into and through the latter along paths that are contiguous to one another throughout their lengths and, in the totality of their cross-dimensions, equal the cross-sectional area of the bed; moving particles of the particulate material to be dried through the bed entirely along the paths of gaseous medium flow; and disposing a layer of particulate material to be dried on the mentioned superficies area of the bed of particulate material whereby the thus deposited layer provides a new superficies area for the bed.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
64 words
In a method of continuous drying particulate material, as described in claim 2, including the additional step of: disposing a second layer of particulate material to be dried in continuous side-by-side relation to the first-mentioned layer and on adjoining portion of the mentioned superficies area of the bed of particulate material whereby the thus deposited layers provide a new superficies area for the bed.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
36 words
In a method of continuous drying particulate material, as described in claim 3, in which the steps of disposing the two mentioned layers are effected such that each layer is disposed coincidentally with the other layer.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
106 words
In a method of continuous drying particulate material, as described in claim 4, including the additional steps of: disposing each of a plurality of successive layers of particulate material to be dried in individual sequence and at predetermined intervals first over the mentioned layer and then over each other; and withdrawing particulate material from the bed of the same in a region below the mentioned superficies area at the mentioned predetermined intervals in substantial synchronism with the disposition of the layers of particulate material and in amounts substantially equal to the displacement of each mentioned layer whereby the mass of the bed is continued substantially constant.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
68 words
In a method of drying particulate material, as described in claim 1, including the additional steps of: transporting particulate material to be dried from exterior to the mentioned confined space and bed of particulate material through the mentioned confined space to superposed registration with the mentioned superficies area of the bed of particulate material, and distributing the transported particulate material in a layer over the mentioned superficies area.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
30 words
In a method of drying particulate material, as described in claim 6, including the additional step of: enclosing the transported particulate material during transportation thereof through the mentioned confined space.
