Abstract
Abstract An industrial drive belt (V-belt) construction featuring an interior reinforcement in the form of a continuous cord extending longitudinally of the belt in repeated spiral wraps through the belt; the cord bearing a sheath or coating of cushion-like properties to thereby permit the belt to stretch even if the cord itself is relatively nonextensible.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
92 words
An elongate cord assembly adapted for interior reinforcement of a formed body, said cord assembly being composed of a gathered-together array of a plurality of elongate subassemblies, said elongate subassemblies including a surrounding matrix formed of a material which is convertible to a resilient state, said material containing any substance, including combinations of substances, operable to expand said matrix material to a greater volume when said cord assembly is ultimately subjected to a stimulus following incorporation of said reinforcement cord assembly into said body, said stimulus being selected to activate said substance.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
19 words
A cord assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein said subassemblies each include a plurality of continuous glass filaments.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
13 words
A cord assembly as claimed in claim 2, wherein said matrix is cellular.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
27 words
A cord assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein each of said subassemblies includes a surrounding coating of said matrix material, thereby conjointly forming a composite matrix.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
26 words
A cord assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein said matrix material is selected from the group consisting of vulcanizable elastomers, thermosetting resins and thermoplastic resins.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
30 words
A formed product containing the cord assembly of claim 1 disposed interiorly thereof with the matrix material expanded to provide a cushion layer between the subassemblies and the surrounding product.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
32 words
A vulcanized rubber product reinforced by the cord assembly of claim 1 disposed interiorly thereof with the matrix material expanded to provide a cushion layer between the subassemblies and the surrounding rubber.
