Abstract

Abstract A valve having improved means of removing and replacing the seat element without having to disconnect the valve from piping or other apparatus, including a valve body having an opening in the lower portion, a seat element removably supported in the valve body having an annular body seating surface surrounding a flow passageway through the valve body, a gate member vertically positionable in the valve body between opened and closed positions, the gate member contacting the seating element seating surface when in closed position, and a removable lower cover plate sealably closing the lower opening in the valve body and permitting, when the cover plate is removed, the removal and insertion of the seating element.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 307 words
A valve having improved means of removing and replacing the seat element without the necessity of disconnecting the valve from piping or other apparatus, comprising: a valve body having a flow passageway therethrough, an upwardly extending bonnet attachment portion having a bonnet opening communicating with the fluid passageway, and an opening in the lower portion of the body opposite the bonnet attachment portion, the lower opening likewise communicating with the flow passageway, the valve body including means of attachment to other flow conducting apparatus, the body having opposed seat receiving grooves to each side of said flow passageway, the grooves being open at the bottom; a seating element removably supported in the valve body having a flow passageway opening therein coaxial with the body flow passageway opening, the seating element having an annular seating surface surrounding the flow passageway, and having a radially extending ridge on the exterior periphery, the ridge being slidably receivable in said body seat receiving grooves; key means between said seating element and lower cover plate whereby said seating element is retained in proper position with the valve body; a gate member vertically positionable in the valve body between a closed position in which said seating element seating surface is contacted, closing the valve against fluid flow therethrough, and an open position in which said gate member is withdrawn upwardly within said bonnet opening permitting free passage of fluid through the valve; means extending partially externally of the valve body for vertically positioning said gate member between opened and closed positions; and a removable lower cover plate sealably closing said lower opening in said valve body, and permitting, when said cover plate is removed, the slidable removal and insertion of said seating element, and when the cover is in closed position, serving to retain said seat element in position in the valve body.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 307 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 108 words
A valve according to claim 1 wherein said body has opposed pairs of seat receiving grooves, each pair being to each side of said flow passageway, and including two seating elements removably supported in the valve body each having a flow passageway opening therein coaxial with the body flow passageway, the seating elements each being spaced apart from each other and each having an annular body seating surface surrounding the flow passageway, each of the seating elements having a radial ridge slidably received in a said pair of body seat receiving grooves, the seating elements receiving said gate member therebetween when said gate member is in closed position.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 39 words
A valve according to claim 2 wherein said seating surfaces of said seating elements are inclined towards each other and wherein said gate member is wedge shaped to engage both said seating surfaces simultaneously when in the closed position.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 49 words
A valVe according to claim 1 wherein said seating element seating surface has an annular groove therein, and including a resilient gasket member received in said groove and normally extending beyond said seating surface to engage said gate member as said gate member is moved to the closed position.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 20 words
A valve according to claim 4 wherein said resilient gasket member is bonded to said groove in said seating element.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 34 words
A valve according to claim 5 wherein said resilient gasket member has a cross-sectional configuration such that the portion extending normally beyond said seating element seating surface is of less width than said groove.
