Abstract
Abstract A method and apparatus for providing intimate countercurrent contact between a fluid and solid particles in which the fluid is directed through a plurality of trays in one direction to fluidize the solid particles and intermittently the flow is reversed to transport the solid particles through passages in the trays to the next subsequent stage. The apparatus includes a plurality of vertically stacked substantially imperforate trays and tubular members defining passages through the trays and extending substantially above and below the trays.

Claim 7
Dependent Claim
35 words
The method according to claim 1 wherein the contacting fluid flow in said contacting zone is maintained at a rate sufficient to fluidize said solid particles in each stage without transporting particles between contacting stages.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
45 words
The method of providing intimate countercurrent contact between a fluid and solid particles in a contacting zone according to claim 1 wherein said reverse fluid flow step transports said solid particles through said vessel in a direction opposite to their settling direction in said fluid.
Claim 9
Independent Claim
210 words
An apparatus for providing intimate contact between fluids and solid particles, comprising an upright vessel, a plurality of substantially imperforate contacting tray structures mounted in vertically spaced relationship to each other within said vessel, a fluid inlet into said vessel, a fluid outlet from said vessel, a solid particle inlet into said vessel, a solid particle outlet from said vessel, a means defining a plurality of passages through each of said tray structures, a plurality of tubular members defining passages extending through each of said tray structures through which fluid flow is to flow for fluidized fluid-solid contacting on said trays and with reverse flow through said passages for solid transport, each of said tubular members extending substantially above and below said tray structure, the upper end of said tubular members terminating below the next higher tray structure, the lower end of each of said tubular members terminating above the next lower tray structure, and means for reversing the direction of fluid flow in said vessel to transport solid particles on each tray structure to the next subsequent tray structure whereby the solid particles move through said vessel in a direction opposite to the direction of flow of fluid through said vessel from said fluid inlet to said fluid outlet.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
45 words
An apparatus according to claim 10 wherein said tray structures include means for assuring that substantially all of the solid particles are discharged from the tray structure during reverse fluid flow before solid particles from the preceding tray structure are received on the tray structure.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
96 words
A fluid-solid contacting apparatus comprising, a plurality of substantially imperforate trays positioned in vertically stacked relationship, and at least one tubular member defining passages extending through each of said trays through which fluid is to flow for fluidized fluid-solid contacting on said trays and with reverse flow through said passages for solid transport, each of said tubular members extending substantially above and below said tray structure, the upper end of each of said tubular members terminating below the next higher tray, the lower end of each of said tubular members terminating above the next lower tray.
