Abstract

Abstract A transducer applying the Johnsen-Rahbek effect wherein the frictional force between two electrodes separated by electrostatically chargeable material is augmented by an increase in potential applied to the electrodes. The transducer measures or reads out the potential or charge patterns on the electrostatically chargeable material which may be a semiconductor, dielectric or other charge carrying surface and converts the force variations into electrical signals.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 139 words
Transmission apparatus comprising a photoconductive member capable of holding an electrostatic charge on a surface thereof, means for placing electrostatic charge on the surface of the photoconductive member capable of holding it exposure means situated to expose said charged photoconductive member to light to form an electrostatic image on said photoconductive member, a yieldingly mounted probe supported for movement relative to the photoconductive member while in sliding contact therewith to scan and read out electrostatic charge variations associated with an electrostatic image on the photoconductive member, detecting means coupled to said probe for generating electrical signals indicative of variations in sliding frictional force between the probe and photoconductive member corresponding to variations in charge comprising an electrostatic image and transmission circuit means coupled to the detecting means for generating electrical signals appropriate for transmission to a remotely located receiver.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 139 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 16 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said photoconductive member is in the form of a belt.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 35 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said detecting means includes a plate capacitively coupled to said probe to detect deflections of the probe relative to the plate caused by variations in said sliding frictional force.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 35 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said transmission circuit means includes oscillator means coupled to the detecting means generating an output signal having its frequency varied in accordance with variations in said sliding frictional force.
