Abstract CHLORINE DIOXIDE IS PREPARED BY REACTING NITROSTY CHLORIDE WITH A CHLORITER OR CHORATE OF AN ALKALI METAL OR ALKALINE EARTH METAL. THE NITROSYL CHORIDE NECESSARY FOR THE REEACTION IS ADVANTAGEOUSLY PREPARED IN SITU BY THE REACTION OF NITRIC ACID AND METAL CHLORIDE SUCH AS AN ALKALI METAL CHLORIDE.
