Abstract

Abstract In preferred embodiments of the disclosure illustrated herein there is shown method and apparatus for shearing a plurality of gobs aligned in a row and issuing from a molten glass feeder. A pair of opposed shear carriages are provided which are movable toward and away from each other between open and shearing positions with respect to a row of gobs. A pair of opposing gob cutting surfaces for each gob to be severed are mounted on the opposed shear carriages. A lever is provided for each shear carriage having one end pivotally connected to its carriage and a portion remote from the carriage end pivotally supported on a frame structure. Each lever is operable to pivot the carriage toward and away from a gob shearing position. Means are connected to each of the shear carriages for pivoting the shear carriages on their levers to translate the arcuate motion imparted to the carrier by the levers to substantially linear motion enabling the gob cutting surfaces to substantially simultaneously engage and sever the plurality of gobs. The motion translating means preferably includes a steering link having one end pivotally connected to the shear carriage a predetermined distance from the lever connection to the carriage, and a means for pivotally supporting the other end of the steering link a fixed distance from the pivotally supported other end of the lever. Novel blade structures, alignment and cooling features are also shown.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 236 words
Gob shearing apparatus for molten glass feeding, comprising a. a pair of opposed shear carriages movable toward and away from each other between open and shearing positions, b. a linkage system for each carriage for moving said carriage in a substantially linear direction toward the opposing carriage during the gob contacting and shearing portion of the carriage movement, c. each said linkage system including four links pivotally connected at their ends to define a four sided figure, said carriage forming a first of said links and having second and third links pivotally connected thereto, d. a fourth link pivotally connected at its ends to said second and third links, e. means for fixedly supporting said fourth link of each linkage system by at least one of its pivotal connections to said second and third links, f. means for reciprocally driving one of said links to pivot said second and third links of each system toward and away from each other to move said carriages between said open and shearing positions, g. said linkage system having a first parameter in which the angle between said fourth link and one of said second and third links may be fixed, and a second parameter in which the two pivots of said fourth link may be fixedly supported with respect to each other, and h. structural means for restricting said linkage system to one of said first and second parameters.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 236 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 41 words
Apparatus as defined in claim 1 which further includes a plurality of pairs of opposed shear blade means mounted on said opposed carriages in an alignment to simultaneously sever a like plurality of gobs issuing from a molten glass feeding means.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 50 words
Apparatus as defined in claim 1 in which a. one of said second and third links of each system extends past its pivotal connection to said fourth link, and which further includes b. fluid cylinder means connected to each of said link extensions and operable to oscillate said link extensions.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 90 words
Apparatus as defined in claim 3 which further includes a. a driving link for each of said link extensions having one end pivotally connected to its associated link extension, b. said fluid cylinder means comprising a single fluid cylinder having a rod reciprocable along a line between said link extensions and having the other ends of said driving links pivotally connected thereto, the path of travel of said rod in any single direction being sufficient to cause said link extensions to move away from each other and toward each other.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 49 words
Apparatus as defined in claim 1 in which said reciprocal driving means includes gear segment means for each system connected to corresponding pivoting links in the two systems and meshed with each other to synchronously move said carriages in response to said reciprocal driving of one of said links.
