Abstract LANTHANUM ALUMINATE CRYSTALS GROWN AS OPTICALLY TRANSLUCENT TWINNED CRYSTALS ARE DETWINNED TO PRODUCE OPTICALLY TRANSPARENT CRYSTALS SUITABLE FOR USE AS LASER HOSTS. THE DETWINNING IS PRODUCED BY APPLICATION OF MODERATE MECHANICAL STRESS TO THE TWINNED CRYSTAL ALONG A (111) DIRECTION UNTIL THE CRYSTAL EXHIBITS OPTICAL TRANSPARENCY.
