Abstract
Abstract Dispersoid strengthened copper metals characterized by a copper matrix and a refractory dispersoid are produced by roll compacting particles characterized by certain spatial and metallurgical relationships. The spatial considerations are characterized by practicable relationships in copper particles between surface area and overall dimensions. The metallurgical relationships are characterized by critical limits of dimensions and spacing of dispersoid subparticles or components thereof on or in the copper matrix particles either before or after roll compacting.

Independent Claim

A process for producing irregular copper particles capable of being roll compacted, said copper particles being characterizied by a sub-system therewithin having characteristics from which sub-particles of large surface area can be generated, said sub-system containing oxygen both in solution within said copper and in combination as Cu2O, said copper particles being characterized by islands of primary crystallite in a sea of euthectic mixture of copper sub-particles and Cu2O sub-particles, maintaining said copper particles at a temperature of at least approximately 705* F. while diffusing hydrogen into said copper particles in order to reduce Cu2O to Cu and H2O, said H2O being steam at high pressure that expands each site of a reduced Cu2O sub-particle in order to produce a sufficiently high specific surface area to result in an apparent particle density ranging from 3 to 5 grams per cubic centimeter.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
102 words
A process for producing irregular copper particles capable of being roll compacted, said copper particles being produced from a copper melt containing a concentration of sulfur ranging betwwn 0.5 and 2.0 percent by total weight, atomizing said melt in a stream of reactive gas selected from the class consisting of oxygen and hydrogen, and causing thereby the sudden formation of SO2, the pressure exerted by said SO2 causing hollow regions in said particles before escaping therefrom, in order to produce a sufficiently high specific surface area to result in an apparent particle density ranging from 3 to 5 grams per cubic centimeter.
