Abstract
Abstract A tubular flexible film or filament is severed along a predetermined locus by cooling the film or filament at said predetermined locus until the film becomes brittle and striking the film at said predetermined locus thereby severing one portion of the film from another. The method preferably contemplates severing a shirred artificial sausage casing by directing a spray of cold gas against the predetermined locus of the casing. Cooling of the casing and the striking thereof for severing the casing is accomplished substantially simultaneously by the cold gas impinging on the casing.
