Abstract

Abstract Strong durable bonds are formed between metals and vinyl chloride-containing polymers by maintaining at a surface of the metal a layer of polymer that contains pendant carboxylic acid GROUPS. One surface of the polymer layer has been modified by oxidation or chemical etching agents. Between the modified surface of the polymer layer and the vinyl chloride-containing polymer is an adhesive comprising a mixture of a natural or synthetic rubber and a phenolaldehyde resin. Heating the composite above 120*C. for a short period of time yields a unitary bonded structure.
