Abstract

Abstract An article of manufacture and a method of producing the article, the method including depositing a nickel-phosphorus alloy coating having a controlled residual stress therein on a metal substrate selected from the group consisting of beryllium, aluminum, titanium, iron, nickel, copper and their alloys. The method includes introducing the metal substrate into an aqueous bath of the nickel cation-hypophosphite anion type and controlling the hypophosphite anion and nickel concentrations, the pH of the bath, and the temperature of the bath to control the phosphorus content of the nickel-phosphorus coating deposited on the metal substrate at a predetermined level depending on the metal substrate and thereafter removing the coated metal substrate from the bath and cooling the same to ambient temperatures to produce a metal substrate having deposited thereon a nickel-phosphorus coating having a controlled residual stress therein. Substantially residual-stressfree coatings may be produced and the coated article may be annealed and re-annealed.
