Abstract
Abstract WHEREIN X represents hydrogen, lower alkyl, -CH2OH, or -SCH2OH; Y represents nitro or halogen; and n represents a number in the range of 0 to 2 are used to protect surface-coating compositions from deterioration resulting from attack by fungi and bacteria. Among the most effective of these compounds as a biocide is 1hydroxymethyl-2-methylbenzimidazole. Compounds that have the structural formula
