Abstract

Abstract A lens of a soft and readily damaged material is placed onto a support having a surface whose contour corresponds to the mating contour of the juxtaposed surface of the lens. The support is rotated and the lens is shifted on it until the lens is centered on the surface of the support, whereupon suction is applied through the support to the lens to hold it immovable as the marginal zones of the lens are being worked.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 104 words
A method of working the marginal zones of a lens--particularly a contact lens--which is of soft and readily damaged material, comprising the steps of placing the lens onto a support having a curved surface so that a circumferential marginal zone of the lens projects beyond said surface; applying a viscous liquid between the lens and the surface; rotating the support; effecting centering of the lens on the surface of the rotating support; retaining the centered lens immovably on the surface of the rotating support; and grinding the marginal zone of the lens with a rotary grinding tool to obtain a desired profile for it.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 104 words
A method of working the marginal zones of a lens--particularly a contact lens--which is of soft and readily damaged material, comprising the steps of placing the lens onto a support having a curved surface so that a circumferential marginal zone of the lens projects beyond said surface; applying a viscous liquid between the lens and the surface; rotating the support; effecting centering of the lens on the surface of the rotating support; retaining the centered lens immovably on the surface of the rotating support; and grinding the marginal zone of the lens with a rotary grinding tool to obtain a desired profile for it.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 23 words
A method as defined in claim 1, wherein said liquid is a viscous oil which is compatible with the material of said lens.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 33 words
A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the step of centering comprises engaging the lens with a bifurcated member, and shifting the lens transversely of the axis of rotation of said support.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 38 words
A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the step of centering comprises engaging the lens with a hollow cap which is movable into engagement with the lens in direction of the axis of rotation of said support.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 26 words
A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the step of centering comprises shifting the lens transversely of the axis of rotation of the rotating support.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 22 words
A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the step of rotating comprises driving the support in rotation at substantially 1000 rpm.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 30 words
A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the step of retaining comprises applying suction to openings which are formed in said surface of said support which said lens overlies.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 21 words
A method as defined in claim 7, wherein the step of applying suction comprises connecting said openings with a vacuum pump.
